RESOLVED: Turnitin Service Outage

UPDATE: This issue has been RESOLVED.
Turnitin, Similarity Check, Originality, and SimCheck are currently experiencing an unexpected service outage. During this time, users may experience slowness when uploading submissions as well as delayed report generation.
We sincerely apologize for the impact this disruption may be causing. We will follow up with more updates as soon as we can.
SoftChalk Hands-On Training

Are you looking to make course content more engaging for your students? Lone Star College faculty and staff can do just that using SoftChalk, the interactive content authoring software and learning object repository provided by the college.
The content you create with SoftChalk integrates into D2L Brightspace and student scores report directly to the D2L gradebook!
During this 2-hour hands-on event, you will learn how to create, manage, discover, and share interactive learning materials using SoftChalk Cloud, that can be delivered to your students in D2L Brightspace. This event requires each person to register and have their own computer during the training to follow along.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day

Thursday, May 16, 2024, is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). The purpose of GAAD is to get everyone talking, thinking, and learning about digital access and inclusion, and the more than one billion people with disabilities/impairments.
Help us celebrate by making a positive impact on inclusive learning by taking sometime this week to improve the accessibility of your course content with Ally. Digital accessibility refers to the ability of people with disabilities/impairments to independently consume and/or interact with digital content. We want our LSC courses to be usable by as wide an audience as possible.

Scheduled Course Purge

Starting on May 22nd, all D2L courses from 2016 will be purged. The purge process will result in the complete deletion of course data.
This yearly process helps maintain system performance in D2L and is completed in accordance with Office of the General Counsel policy.
If you have 2016 course data that has not been backed up, please do so as soon as possible. You can either export your content to a .zip file or create a sandbox and copy the content to it.

New Functions available for Arithmetic Quiz Question Type
- When creating an Arithmetic type question in a Quiz or the Question Library, the following new functions are available:
- ASIN
- ACOS
- ABS
- Log2
- SINH
- COSH

During this time, services (including the D2L Turnitin integration) will be unavailable. Assignments should not be submitted to Turnitin or Turnitin-enabled assignment folders in D2L during this timeframe.

RESOLVED: Respondus Monitor LiveChat Outage

UPDATE: This issue has been resolved.
At this time, the Respondus Monitor LiveChat service is experiencing an outage.
Both Respondus Lockdown Browser and Respondus Monitor are unaffected, only the LiveChat help system built into Respondus Monitor is affected.
Students who have issues with Respondus Monitor can reach Respondus Support here: https://web.respondus.com/support/, as well as reaching out to the Contact the IT Service Desk for assistance.
The underlying LiveChat technology is managed by a third party other than Respondus; status and updates on this issue can be followed here: https://status.livechat.com/.
EquatIO and Latex in D2L for STEM

We are also pleased to announce our Keynote Speaker Dr. Kasonde Musoma, who you might remember from a video of him that went viral in 2017 and landed him on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. As a Professor at Texas A&M University, he held a 10-month old baby during class so that a single mom student could attend class and was officially dubbed “The Professor of Kindness.” This sparked a global conversation, not only on the power of kindness, but on non-traditional student experiences and accessibility to higher education

March D2L Update

Adding Links in the Brightspace Editor
Under the Insert Quicklink dropdown menu, the [URL] option has been renamed to [Link]. The window should also now show options to open the link in a New window or Current window.
This feature also updates the icons shown in Insert Quicklink to ensure all icons use the new style.

February D2L Update

Branded Footer
A Powered by D2L Brightspace footer now appears on select pages in Brightspace.
Question Library
- The blue question mark icon that appears next to questions in Question Library under Quizzes is removed to prevent visual clutter. However, the folder icon that appears in Question Library next to each section remains.

January D2L Update

The next update for D2L is scheduled for January 26th.
Important information regarding the update:
Collaboration
- The Chat Tool is being removed for all users. We recommend the Instant Message Tool or Webex as replacements.
HTML Editor
- In the HTML Editor, when using [Insert Stuff] and selecting [My Computer], it is now possible to select files by dragging and dropping them from your device.
D2L Virtual Assistant
- The [I have a different question] option is now replaced by a [Type here] field at the bottom of the Virtual Assistant. For more info, please refer to their respective articles in both VTAC and VLAC.
Quizzes
- Now, when publishing Quiz grades for attempts with ungraded Written Response questions, those questions will stay pending, but will be treated as a 0 until they are graded. When viewing a published quiz attempt, the message "not auto-graded: a default value of 0 was assigned" will now appear next to each ungraded written response question.

Extended Support Hours

LSC-Online is offering extended support hours on Saturday, Jan. 13th from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. The LSC-Online team will be providing ticket support and a virtual open lab to assist faculty with D2L, supported technologies, and course design.
