Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What are the differences between the Quick On-Boarding, the Full Online Teaching Certification Program (OTC), and the Advanced Online Teaching Program (OTC)?
The Quick On-Boarding session is the prerequisite for completing the Full Online Teaching Certification Program (OTC). It was designed to cover some basic information. A faculty member who completes Quick On-Boarding will be certified to teach online up to one (1) year. Within that year, they will have to complete the Full OTC. The Full OTC covers additional online teaching resources and more in depth information about services provided by Lone Star College for faculty members teaching online. Completing the Full OTC will certify faculty members to teach online for up to three (3) years. The Advanced OTC primarily targets faculty who completed the Angel LMS certification or one of the Online Teaching Certification cohorts whose certifications are now expired. This course will recertify those faculty members for three (3) years.
Q: How can I find out whether I am certified to teach online?
Please refer to Faculty Instructions for Viewing Certification Status.
Q. I was certified in Angel and I am now receiving a notice that I need to recertify. What course should I take?
At this time, you may take the Advanced OTC.
Q. My certification has expired and I have been teaching online for over three (3) years; do I have to start over with the basics?
You can start by taking the Advanced OTC. All of the OTC training modules were designed based on a competency-based model. This means if you are already familiar with the content covered in each module, you can go straight to the assessment and advance by scoring 80% or higher on each assessment within each module. The OTC certification programs include a lot of new resources on following topics: online student engagement, student interaction, student contact, faculty contact, community building, common social media tools, Learning Management System (LMS) tools, online tutoring, online proctoring, design for accessibility, copyright, online resources, SoftChalk, Civitas Learning Illume and Inspire, Cisco WebEx, and open educational resources.
Q. How do Deans or Chairs check to see what certifications instructors have and who may need an update?
LSC-Online will continue to provide Online Teaching Certification (OTC) reports about one month prior to the beginning of every long semester. Any information needed regarding the status of a faculty member’s OTC completion between reporting times can be found via the job aid listed at the URL above.
We recommend that all campuses access their respective reports in MyWorkshops for the most up to date information because:
- Faculty assignments, staffing, and hiring are constantly changing.
- Online Teaching Certification is an on-demand online course so new certified faculty are continually being added.
